The Driving Company's 1-Day Winching & Off-Road Vehicle Recovery Course provides professional, hands-on training in the safe and effective use of winches, kinetic recovery ropes, rigging, recovery points, shackles, mechanical advantage, anchors, and other essential 4x4 recovery equipment.
Recovery operations can generate tremendous forces. Using the wrong equipment, selecting an inappropriate recovery point, standing in the wrong place, or improperly rigging a winch can result in serious injury, equipment failure, or expensive vehicle damage.

Since 2003, The Driving Company has provided professional off-road training to personnel and instructors from more than 150 public safety agencies, including search and rescue organizations, firefighters, law enforcement officers, park personnel, and military personnel. Every TDC instructor is certified by the State of California in off-road Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC) instruction.

You don't need to own a winch or any recovery equipment to attend.
We provide the winches, ropes, shackles, rigging equipment, and recovery accessories you'll use during training. In fact, if you haven't purchased recovery equipment yet, we recommend waiting until after the course.
You'll gain hands-on experience with different types of equipment, understand their advantages and limitations, and learn how to determine what's appropriate for your vehicle and the type of off-road travel you actually do.
Already own recovery equipment? Bring it. We'll help you understand how to inspect it, evaluate its ratings, and use it safely.

No Winch on Your Vehicle? You Still Need Recovery Skills.
You don't need to own a winch to play an important role in a vehicle recovery.
When traveling with other vehicles, someone else may have the winch, but they may need your help evaluating hazards, selecting recovery points, rigging equipment, communicating with drivers, or maintaining a safe recovery area.
A knowledgeable team member can make a recovery safer and more effective. An untrained person attempting to help can unintentionally make a dangerous situation worse.
Even if you never install a winch, understanding vehicle recovery makes you a more capable and valuable member of any off-road group.
Vehicle Recovery Is About Problem-Solving, Not Just Equipment
Knowing how to operate a winch controller isn't the same as knowing how to recover a vehicle.
Every recovery presents a different problem.
Where is the vehicle stuck? How much resistance must be overcome? What direction should it move? Is there a suitable anchor? Are the recovery points properly rated? How much force will the equipment and anchor experience? Our course teaches you to evaluate these questions before connecting equipment or beginning a recovery.
You'll learn the principles behind mechanical advantage, multi-line pulls, direction changes, required pull force, anchor force, equipment ratings, and safe rigging.
The goal isn't simply to get a vehicle unstuck. It's to understand how to accomplish the recovery safely.

Recovery Equipment: What You Actually Need
There are countless recovery products available, and plenty of opportunities to spend money on equipment you may never need.
We'll help you understand what different products do, how they're rated, and which equipment makes sense for your vehicle.
Equipment covered may include:
- Electric winches and winching accessories
- Kinetic Energy Recovery Ropes (KERR)
- Recovery straps and winch extension lines
- Snatch blocks and recovery rings
- Rated hard shackles and soft shackles
- Tree straps and appropriate anchor equipment
- Chains and their appropriate applications
- Recovery dampers
- Land anchors
- Rated vehicle recovery points
- Common rigging and recovery accessories
Most importantly, you'll learn to evaluate working loads, equipment ratings, compatibility, and the forces equipment may experience during an actual recovery.
Kinetic Rope & Dynamic Vehicle Recovery
Kinetic recovery can be extremely effective when performed correctly. It can also introduce substantial forces into both vehicles, their recovery points, and the recovery equipment.
Students learn how kinetic recovery differs from winching and static recovery, when it may be appropriate, and when another recovery method is the safer choice.
Training includes:
- Kinetic recovery principles
- Selecting appropriately rated equipment
- Vehicle recovery-point considerations
- Proper setup and connections
- Driver-to-driver communication
- Establishing a safe recovery area
- Safe positioning of participants
- Managing the recovery
- Recognizing when kinetic recovery is inappropriate
Students participate in an actual dynamic vehicle recovery under professional instructor supervision.
The Final Challenge: Put Everything Together
At the end of the course, we're going to give you a problem.
Your team will be presented with a realistic off-road vehicle recovery scenario, but we won't simply tell you which equipment to use or how to solve it.
You'll need to:
- Assess the situation and identify hazards.
- Develop a recovery plan.
- Determine the required direction of pull.
- Calculate the forces involved.
- Select appropriate recovery equipment and anchors.
- Establish safety procedures and communication.
- Rig the recovery and execute your plan.
Our instructors will supervise the exercise and ensure it is conducted safely.
But you'll solve the problem. Because when a vehicle gets stuck in the backcountry, there usually isn't an instructor standing beside you holding the answer.
Independent Equipment Recommendations. No Sponsorships.
The Driving Company maintains relationships with reputable recovery-equipment manufacturers and suppliers. We've even beta tested equipment for some of these companies. However, there's an important distinction:
The Driving Company does not accept equipment sponsorships.
We've intentionally declined sponsorship offers because we want our students to know that our recommendations are based on equipment performance, appropriate ratings, professional experience, and their actual needs, not financial incentives. If a manufacturer makes good equipment, we'll tell you. If we don't believe you need a particular product, we'll tell you that too. Our relationships with equipment suppliers may also provide students with discounts on recovery equipment after completing the course. Those discounts are a benefit to our students. They do not influence our instruction or equipment recommendations.
