Our civilian off-road driving courses aren't law enforcement or emergency vehicle training classes repackaged for the public. They're designed specifically for recreational drivers and overlanders who want to learn how to explore safely and confidently. Our training emphasizes actual driving experience, not classroom lectures. You'll learn by driving your own vehicle over real off-road terrain, practicing techniques, negotiating obstacles, and receiving personalized coaching from professional instructors.

We don't simply lead you through obstacles and tell you where to turn. We teach you to understand your vehicle, evaluate terrain, select appropriate driving techniques, and make sound decisions independently. Our goal is to give you the knowledge and confidence to explore the backcountry safely, whether you're traveling alone or with a group.

There are plenty of experienced recreational off-road drivers and clubs offering instruction. The Driving Company is different. Every Driving Company instructor is certified by the State of California in off-road Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) instruction and has completed professional instructor-development training. The Driving Company is the only private off-road training provider in California whose entire instructor team holds this state certification. Every one of our instructors brings more than 20 years of real-world experience in off-road vehicle operations, professional instruction, or public safety field operations. Our instructors understand not only how to negotiate difficult terrain but also how to recognize potential problems before they become emergencies.

Our Lead Instructor, Dave Storton, holds a Master's Degree in Adult Education. Our instructional methods are grounded in how adults learn complex skills, combining demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individualized coaching.

Our One-Day Basic Off-Road Driving & Overlanding Course at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area is designed for beginners and recreational drivers who want to understand their vehicles, develop essential off-road driving skills, and gain the confidence to explore safely.

Sand driving is a completely different off-road experience.

Soft sand, constantly changing terrain, and the unique demands of dune driving require specialized techniques and a different understanding of traction, momentum, and vehicle control.  

Our Two-Day Sand Driving Course takes place at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area near Pismo Beach, California, where The Driving Company also trains the park personnel and paramedics who respond to emergencies in the dunes.

Over two days of hands-on instruction, you'll learn how to navigate sandy terrain safely, understand how your vehicle responds to changing conditions, and recognize situations that can lead to becoming stuck. Whether you're preparing for an overlanding adventure, exploring coastal dunes, or expanding your off-road driving skills, this course provides practical experience in a unique environment.

Graduates of The Driving Company's training courses are invited to join our established private Facebook community of hundreds of trained off-road drivers who connect, share knowledge, exchange ideas, and organize their own off-road and overlanding adventures together. Unlike joining a random group of strangers on the trail, you'll be connecting with people who have completed training with The Driving Company and share a common foundation of safe, responsible off-road driving.

A couple of times each year, we offer our graduates opportunities to join our professional instructors and guides on complimentary overnight overlanding trips. These trips are designed to help you take the next step beyond your training course, applying your driving skills in a real-world overlanding environment while learning from instructors and guides who each bring decades of experience.

Our informal "Campfire Classroom" provides opportunities to ask questions, share experiences, and learn from instructors with decades of experience in a relaxed, enjoyable setting.
