Professional Hands-On Training for Rivian R1T and R1S Owners
Your Rivian R1T or R1S is an extraordinary piece of engineering. With sophisticated electric drive systems, advanced traction management, adjustable suspension, and impressive off-road capability, it's designed to go well beyond the pavement.
But owning a capable vehicle and knowing how to use that capability are two different things.
The Driving Company provides professional, hands-on Rivian off-road driving training at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area in California.
We've trained hundreds of electric off-road vehicle drivers, including numerous Rivian owner groups and dedicated Rivian training classes.
Unlike follow-the-leader off-road tours, our courses provide individualized instruction tailored to you, your driving experience, and your specific Rivian.
Whether you're new to off-roading or have years of experience with conventional 4WD vehicles, we'll help you understand how your Rivian performs in challenging terrain and how to use its capabilities safely and effectively.
We train the professionals. Now we train you.
Since 2003, The Driving Company has provided off-road driver training to personnel and instructors from more than 150 public safety agencies, including search and rescue organizations, firefighters, law enforcement officers, park personnel, and military personnel. Every instructor at The Driving Company is certified by the State of California in off-road Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC) instruction. Our Lead Instructor holds a Master's Degree in Adult Education, and our training methods emphasize practical understanding, sound decision-making, and hands-on learning.
We're not simply going to lead you around a trail and tell you where to turn.
We're going to teach you how to understand your Rivian, evaluate the terrain, and make better decisions behind the wheel.
At The Driving Company, we don't believe that following another vehicle down a trail teaches you how to become a better off-road driver.
We don't do follow-the-leader training.
Instead, you'll receive individualized, hands-on instruction from a state-certified off-road driving instructor who works directly with you and your specific Rivian R1T or R1S.
You'll learn how to evaluate terrain, select the appropriate driving technique, understand your vehicle's capabilities and limitations, and negotiate obstacles safely and confidently.
Our instructors explain not just what to do, but why you're doing it. And because Rivian vehicles have unique electric drive systems, suspension configurations, and traction-management capabilities, your instruction will address the particular vehicle you're driving.
Our goal isn't simply to get you through an obstacle. It's to give you the knowledge and skills to negotiate the next one on your own.
Driving a Rivian off road is not the same as driving a conventional Jeep, pickup, or SUV.
Electric propulsion, individual wheel torque control on applicable models, regenerative braking, suspension settings, and electronic traction management can significantly change how the vehicle responds to difficult terrain. Our instructors have extensive experience training drivers in electric off-road vehicles, including Rivian R1T and R1S models.
During your training, we'll help you understand how your particular Rivian responds to:
Our instruction is adapted to the equipment and capabilities of the Rivian you bring, including differences between model years and drive configurations.
The goal isn't to see how much punishment your Rivian can take. It's to learn how to use its capabilities without unnecessarily abusing a very expensive vehicle.
Our 1-Day Basic Off-Road Driving & Overlanding Course takes place at Hollister Hills SVRA, near Hollister, California. You'll drive your own Rivian through a variety of terrain and obstacles under the supervision of experienced, state-certified instructors.
Rather than simply following a guide, you'll receive direct instruction, practice essential techniques, and learn how to make your own decisions in challenging off-road conditions.
We emphasize practical skills you can use when exploring California's backcountry, traveling on forest roads, or heading out on your next overland adventure. You'll learn not only how to negotiate obstacles, but how to recognize potential problems before you encounter them. We call this Mechanical Sympathy: understanding what your vehicle is doing, selecting the appropriate technique, and preserving your equipment while accomplishing your objective. A capable driver knows when to proceed, how to proceed, and when it's smarter to choose another route.
No.
Our Basic Off-Road Driving & Overlanding Course is appropriate for first-time off-road drivers as well as experienced drivers who are new to electric 4x4 vehicles.
Bring your Rivian R1T or R1S. We'll provide the instruction.
You can attend individually or share your vehicle with another registered student. Both students will have opportunities to develop practical driving and spotting skills.
Our regularly scheduled Rivian training is conducted as part of The Driving Company's 1-Day Basic Off-Road Driving & Overlanding Course. Rivian owners train alongside other 4x4 drivers while receiving individual instruction tailored to their own vehicles. We've also conducted dedicated Rivian training classes and worked with Rivian owner groups.
For groups of eight or more, custom training arrangements may be available.
1-Day Basic Off-Road Driving & Overlanding Course
Location: Hollister Hills SVRA, Hollister, California
Tuition: $360 per person
Bring: Your own Rivian R1T or R1S
Our classes have limited enrollment to ensure meaningful hands-on driving time and individual instruction. Popular dates frequently fill, and waiting lists are common.

You've already invested in an exceptionally capable vehicle. Now invest a day learning how to use it.

Learning to negotiate challenging terrain is just the beginning.
At The Driving Company, we believe the real value of off-road training comes when you take those skills beyond the controlled environment of an off-road park and put them to work on an actual overland adventure.
We've guided Rivian owners on numerous multi-day overlanding expeditions, where driving technique is only part of the challenge.
In the backcountry, energy management becomes just as important as traction management.
Unlike conventional gasoline-powered vehicles, electric adventure vehicles require additional consideration when planning remote routes. Distance, elevation gain and loss, terrain difficulty, driving conditions, and available charging opportunities can all influence the energy needed to complete a journey. Our instructors help Rivian drivers understand these factors, evaluate their vehicle's energy consumption, and make informed decisions throughout an expedition.
We're currently developing a multi-day North Coast Overland Adventure through the coastal mountains of Southern Oregon, with details to be announced soon.
This guided adventure will be open to qualified Rivian owners who have previously trained with The Driving Company. Participants will receive detailed route information, including travel distances and elevation-change profiles. Our instructors will help them evaluate the implications for vehicle performance and energy management.
It's an opportunity to apply the skills developed in our off-road training courses to the real-world challenges of remote overland travel.
We don't just teach you how to drive your Rivian off road. We teach you how to prepare for the adventure, understand your vehicle's limitations, and confidently put your training to use in the backcountry.
