Lead Instructors

Our  instructors have the knowledge, skill and experience to meet your needs.  Although we have a large team of instructors, here are the lead instructors for the various courses we offer.  You will not find another team of driving instructors with this level of expertise! All of our instructors are California POST certified. 

 

Dave Storton

Dave Storton holds a Master's Degree in Adult Education.  He is recognized by the State of California (POST) as an expert in vehicle operations and off road training.  He is the lead instructor for the emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) at the San Jose Police Academy.  He teaches EVOC instructor courses, advanced EVOC instructor courses, off road EVOC, and counter-terrorist / dignitary protection driving.  In addition to teaching civilian off road courses and leading off road adventures, he teaches Hollywood stunt drivers at the Motion Picture Stunt Driving School.     Dave has been teaching for over 15 years.  He also teaches leadership / teambuilding, and teaches other instructors in art of facilitation and adult learning concepts in a POST certified Instructor Development Course.  Dave was recently featured in the San Jose Mercury News and the Monterey Herald for his driving expertise.

 

 

 

 

John Raabe

John Raabe

John Raabe is the lead EVOC instructor for the South Bay Regional Academy at the College of San Mateo and is a POST certified instructor.  He is trained in off road EVOC and dignitary protection driving.  He is recognized by the State of California as an expert in vehicle operations and off road training.  He has been a driving instructor for 16 years and has trained over 4,000 students.  In addition to teaching driving, he teaches Sunday School!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Steve Wagy

Steve Wagy has been employed by the State of California for over 36 years and recently retired from his position as the Department Training Officer for California State Parks. Steve is both a certified Driving Instructor and Driver Awareness Instructor.  He has been teaching EVOC for 3 years at several basic law enforcement academies in Central California.  In addition, he teaches the POST Perishable Skill Driving Program to various state and local law enforcement agencies. Steve has a current class “A” commercial driver’s license with endorsements for transporting passengers, tank vehicles and motorcycles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ron Waterman

Ron Waterman started his Fire Service career in 1976. He is the Sacramento Fire Department’s lead EVOC instructor. Ron has been assigned to the division of training as a full time EVOC instructor since 1998. He is also an Academy EVOC instructor for the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Ron is a California POST certified instructor for EVOC, PIT, Skid Car, Off Road driving and Winching, Motorcycles, and Driving Simulators. He is recognized by the State of California as an expert in Commercial Vehicle Operations and is certified by DMV for testing Class A and B vehicles (including Busses). Ron also teaches trailer towing for Class C vehicles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lanny Brown

Lanny Brown has been employed in the field of law enforcement for 34 years.  He recently retired from his position as Assistant Police Chief for the Gilroy Police Department.  Lanny is a POST certified EVOC instructor.  He has been teaching EVOC for nearly 20 years and is a lead instructor for several Central Coast police academies to include:  San Mateo, Evergreen, Gavilan, Monterey Peninsula College, San Jose PD, and CA State Parks.  Additionally, he teaches:  the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT), instructor level EVOC courses, and off-road EVOC.   He is trained in dignitary protection driving and is a State of California expert in Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).  Lanny has a Bachelors Degree in Organizational Behavior and a Masters Degree in Leadership.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Scot Smithee

Scot Smithee

Scot Smithee has a Bachelors Degree in Organizational Behavior, and a Masters Degree in Leadership.  Scot is recognized by the State of California as an expert in vehicle operations and off road training.  He is the lead driving instructor for several police academies, and he teaches EVOC instructor courses.  Scot has trained over 6,500 students.  Scot is also trained in counter-terrorist / dignitary protection driving, PIT, and off road vehicle operations.  In addition to driving Scot teaches leadership and ethics courses.  Scot is the recipient of the prestigious Carnegie Medal, and the Coast Guard Gold Medal for life saving.  Click here to read how he saved the lives of seven people while on vacation in Hawaii.
